  23. 000 *** ABOUT DATASHOP
  24.  
  25.     Datashop runs under Windows or IRIX/SGI. Datasets for Macintosh applications
  26.     may be delivered via ftp/internet or via overnight courier directly from Viewpoint.
  27.     This is a two volume set. Each CD includes unique categories
  28.     of models.  Be sure to check both CDs for the model you need.  While running 
  29.     Datashop, no setup files will be copied to your hard drive.  Only the Datasets you
  30.     select for download will be copied to your drive. 
  31.     
  32.     IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS THAT RESULT IN NOT BEING ABLE TO RUN 
  33.     THE DATASHOP PROGRAM, PLEASE CALL VIEWPOINT. OUR 3D MODELS ARE 
  34.     AVAILABLE THROUGH OTHER MEDIA AND SERVICES. WE WOULD APPRECIATE 
  35.     YOUR CALL. ALSO, CHECK US OUT ON THE WEB.

  37.     If you are reading this, chances are you have Datashop
  38.     mounted and working to the point you can launch it. If you have 
  39.     experienced some technical difficulty running this under Windows or 
  40.     on an SGI, please review the following lists for either Windows (001)
  41.     or IRIX/SGI (002).
  42.  
  43.     
  44. 001 ***    DATASHOP FOR WINDOWS
  45.     1A    You should acquaint yourself with Windows and be familiar 
  46.         enough to access the CD directory and click on the Viewpoint 
  47.         Datashop icon. 
  48.     
  49.     1B    Do you have enough RAM? You will need at least 6 Mb of RAM to
  50.         run this application.
  51.         
  52.     1C    Do you have enough conventional memory free? You will need 575Kb.
  53.     
  54.     1D    You must have at least 800x600 screen resolution capability.
  55.     
  56.     1E    Do you have enough free space on your hard drive to download a
  57.         file. If you have less than 5 Mb free, we recommend clearing
  58.         more space.
  59.     
  60.     1F    The default path that is set for downloading files, will be 
  61.         "c:\datashop". When you are in the "4 steps to download..." screen
  62.         and are prompted to verify your download path; you may accept
  63.         "c:\datashop" or you may type in a different directory path. 
  64.         
  65.     1G    Is the power turned on to all of your hardware? Believe it or
  66.         not, this is sometimes a solution.
  67.         
  68.     1H    If you are networked, are there any network related problems?
  69.     
  70.     1I    In very rare cases, usually when a network is involved, there
  71.         may be permissions problems that will restrict reading  or 
  72.         writing to the current directory. This scenario may not allow
  73.         you to download a dataset. If you just created this directory 
  74.         to download to, change to a different directory you know you 
  75.         can copy files to and then try again.
  76.         
  77.     1J    You must be using current versions of the  following DLL's:
  78.         bwcc.dll
  79.         bc453rtl.dll
  80.         bids47.dll
  81.         owl253.dll
  82.         You will experience errors if your system has old versions of these
  83.         DLL's in its c:\windows\system directory.  If you experience errors,
  84.         you may replace the DLL's currently on your system with the 
  85.         updated DLL's found on the DataShop CD in the \bin\windows 
  86.         directory.

  88.     1K    If none of the above suggestions help, please give us a call.

  91. 002 *** DATASHOP FOR IRIX/SGI
  92.  
  93.     2A    You should have a basic knowledge of working in/on a IRIX/SGI.
  94.         You should be able to change directory to the path you would 
  95.         like to download to.
  96.         e.g., 1% cd [your/path] ...and then hit enter
  97.     
  98.     2B    Some common UNIX commands:
  99.         man     There is a series of "man" (manuals) that will list 
  100.             the syntax and usage of any command. If I wanted to 
  101.             know what the "cd" command does I may do the following:
  102.             e.g., 2% man cd  ...and then hit enter
  103.             A manual page for "cd" will be displayed.
  104.         
  105.          COMMAND    DESCRIPTION
  106.         cd    Change directory
  107.         cd ..      This will take you up one directory. 
  108.         df    This will list the verified, mounted drives.
  109.         hinv    This will give a listing of all the installed hardware.
  110.         ls    This will list the current directory
  111.         ls -a    This lists all files including dot files
  112.         ls -l    This lists all available directories and files in long 
  113.             format.It will show permissions, owner, size, date and 
  114.             full name.
  115.     EXAMPLE OF ls -l
  116.     -rwxrwxrwx    1 pau    techpro  2145238   Jan 13 15:24  pammy*

  118.        (permissions) (owner)   (group) (file size) (date) (time) (full name)

  120.     2C    You need to go to a directory on your hard drive.
  121.         (refer to the info above). When you are in the directory where you 
  122.         wish to deposit your datasets you will need to execute Datashop.
  123.         
  124.     2D    To execute Datashop from the SGI, you simply type the path 
  125.         to the cd and include the executable "datashop"...
  126.         e.g., 3% /CDROM/datashop ...and then hit enter. 
  127.         Datashop should now be on your screen and the default download
  128.          directory should be the directory you launched from.
  129.         
  130.     2E    Permissions on your directory may restrict reading or writing
  131.         when you try to download. Make sure you have permissions set 
  132.         correctly.
  133.     
  134.     2F    Configuration of hardware or external components may not be 
  135.         turned on or may not be connected correctly.
  136.         
  137.     2G    Do you have enough space free on your hard drive to allow for 
  138.         a download. Free up some space if necessary. (df command)
  139.         
  140.     2H    You must have at least 800x600 screen resolution capability.
  141.     
  142.     2I    If you are networked, are there complications due to your 
  143.         networking?
  144.     
  145.     2J    If none of the above suggestions help, please give us a call.

  147. 003 *** SPECIFIC SOFTWARE TIPS
  148.  
  149.     SoftImage
  150.     After downloading a file from DataShop you should select the entire 
  151.     model and run the following command:
  152.         ->Effects
  153.             -> Recompute Normal
  154.     This will compute the vertex normals needed to display shading correctly.
  155.  
  156.     Softimage
  157.     Periodically you may experience a message similar to the following:
  158.     WARNING:* ....4 & 408, that have the same oriented edge (1,268)
  159.     Use the ->Effects
  160.             ->Reorder
  161.     Save the file out and read it back in. This should eliminate the message.
  162.     
  163.     
  164.     N-Geometry
  165.     Files downloaded for N-Geometry will be downloaded in .obj format.  
  166.     These files should be 'imported' into N-Geo using the following command:
  167.         Main Menu
  168.             ->  Add New Object
  169.                 ->  Read
  170.                     ->  obj
  171.     
  172.  
  173.     Alias polys
  174.     Alias polygons may be used by importing either dxf or obj.  DXF files 
  175.     will retain grouping.  OBJ files will require the following steps to extract
  176.     the groups:
  177.     1.   Select "Set - Set Lister" under the Windows menu
  178.     2.   The group names will now be displayed in a dialog box
  179.     3.   Open the SBD window. One node of the whole object will be present
  180.     4.   Select the group name from the dialog box from "Set Lister"
  181.     5.   Go to "Polygon Edit" and select "Extract Polygons"
  182.           A new node of the extracted geometry will be in the SBD window
  183.     6.   You can rename the node to reflect what it is
  184.     7.   Repeat this for each individual group
  185.  
  186.     ElectricImage
  187.     Since these files are downloaded on the PC or SGI, they do not retain the 
  188.     resource fork for the Macintosh.  Therefore, you must use the 'Import" 
  189.     command when reading these files into ElectricImage on the Mac.
  190.  
  191. 004 *** KEYWORD SEARCH
  192.     4A    The SEARCH function provides a way to use related words to 
  193.         find a specific Dataset on Datashop. Simply enter in the 
  194.         appropriate information you think will help locate what you 
  195.         are searching for. Be as general or specific as you would 
  196.         like.  If your search has no match, simply widen/shorten the 
  197.         parameters and try again.
  198.  
  199.     4B    The search is not case sensitive. Any input letter will be 
  200.         recognized as lower case.
  201.  
  202.     4C    The search has been updated to include the ability to choose 
  203.         a range in quantity of polygons. Use the "min number of 
  204.         polygons:" and the "max number of polygons:" to determine a 
  205.         range of polygons to search on. 
  206.  
  207.     4D    You may use AND, OR, & NOT to restrict your search. A space 
  208.         between words has the same result as using AND. 
  209.         EXAMPLE: A search on the word HORSE would give you a listing 
  210.         of all of the horse related Datasets available on the CD. To 
  211.         begin your search, enter your word and be sure to click the 
  212.         SEARCH ALL button. You cannot search the "Search
